Dear conference participants,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Uppsala-BASEES conference, “Regimes and Societies in Conflict: Eastern Europe and Russia since 1956”. Over the last 60 years, Eastern Europe and Russia have seen dramatic shifts in the political, economic and cultural landscape, from monolithic dictatorships to a variety of contemporary politics. In an era in which new lines of divisions are being drawn and Europe is once again facing the challenge of discord between East and West, this conference provides the opportunity to reflect on the changes in the region and learn from the past. There is a truly impressive variety of papers and presentations, with all the major disciplines in the social sciences and humanities represented. It is indeed a true multidisciplinary conference with cutting-edge research. I am particularly delighted that BASEES has decided to organize this conference in Uppsala in collaboration with the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (IRES), Uppsala University. On behalf of IRES and the BASEES committee, I wish you a very good conference!
